The idea that a wide grip "hits the lats wider," or that a close grip "isolates the lower lats," is one of the most repeated claims in gym culture. A 2025 EMG study testing seven grip and angle combinations found no statistically significant difference in latissimus dorsi activation between any of them. The one significant finding in the entire study was in the posterior deltoid, not the lats.
Muscle Activation: What the Research Actually Shows
A 2025 study published in the Journal of Functional Morphology and Kinesiology is the most detailed grip investigation on this exercise to date. Forty trained male lifters (minimum 5 years of resistance training experience) performed seven lat pulldown variants at 70% of their 1RM. Surface EMG measured the latissimus dorsi, middle and lower trapezius, posterior deltoid, biceps brachii, and infraspinatus. The seven variants included wide pronated, narrow pronated, supinated, narrow neutral, and wide neutral grips. Two more variants added a 30-degree trunk incline to the wide pronated and wide neutral grips.
The core finding: statistical analysis (MANOVA) found no significant difference in latissimus dorsi activation across any of the seven grip and angle combinations. This held true whether looking at the full movement, the concentric (pulling) phase, or the eccentric (release) phase. Lat activation stayed relatively stable across every variant. It was generally in the 45-50% of MVC range across the full movement, rising to 56-62% of MVC during the concentric phase specifically. The only statistically significant difference found anywhere in the entire study was in the posterior deltoid. It showed greater activation in the wide pronated grip with trunk incline compared to the standard wide pronated and wide neutral grips.
The researchers' own conclusion is worth quoting directly: "Varying the grip type or forearm orientation did not significantly change the activation of the main muscles involved in the lat pulldown movement... These findings challenge the conventional assumption regarding the effectiveness of different grip types in maximising LD stimulation." This lines up with an earlier study on the topic. Research published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research (2014) tested narrow, medium (1.5x biacromial), and wide (2x biacromial) pronated grips. It similarly found comparable EMG activation across the latissimus dorsi, trapezius, and infraspinatus when analyzing the full movement. That study did find lifters could handle heavier 6RM loads with narrow and medium grips than with the widest grip tested. That's a load-capacity difference, not a lat-activation difference.
Shoulder Health and Comfort
The research doesn't support one grip producing meaningfully more lat growth. Shoulder comfort becomes a legitimate deciding factor rather than an afterthought. A wide pronated grip places the shoulder in more external rotation and horizontal abduction. Some lifters with shoulder impingement history find this uncomfortable at end range.
