Types of Smith Machines

The bar travels a fixed vertical path on linear bearings. The standard commercial format and the safe default for a first Smith machine.

The bar can move through a slight arc or side to side instead of a single straight line, which lets it track closer to a free-weight bar path.

  • Lifters who find a fixed vertical path uncomfortable: a 3D/multi-plane unit lets the bar track a more natural path.
